So I've been back at school for a couple weeks now, so I figure I should update this thing.
I read a lot over break, and even though a lot of that reading was webcomics, a lot of it was also legit books.
Let's see...I read...
1) Lucky by Alice Sebold (B-)
2) Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri (B)
3) Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (B-/C+)
4) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (C)
5) Sabriel by Garth Nix (B+)
6) The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe (B+)
7) Spindle's End (A)
As you can see, most of my reading experiences weren't particularly wonderful. They were, on the whole, very "ok", but I wasn't really blown away (Spindle's End is the exception to this).

Interesting, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who found The Alchemist a little lacking. I blame it partially on the fact that others seemed to turn it into a legendary book before I had the chance to pick it up myself.
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed Sabriel, although I suspect that if I read it now, I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did back in middle school.
I haven't been motivated enough to finish Lucky (it seems like a less fictionly version of The Lovely Bones), but only a C for The Alchemist? I thought that was a great book. Very allegorical and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteEh, I thought the writing style was somewhat insipid. I felt like the book was pushing its agenda way too hard. It lacked both subtlety and detail. But, then again, maybe I feel that way because I went in expecting a gripping masterpiece and ended up having a very mediocre experience. I prefer Donna Boyd's novel of the same title. Now THAT is great fiction.
